Halloween Horror Nights Orlando 2017 Review
I have been making the trek to Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights for the past 6 years. The quality of the houses and scare zones has varied throughout the years but the event overall has remained top notch and well worth the price of admission. Halloween Horror Nights takes everything that I love about theme parks and haunted houses and combines them in some insanely creative ways.
Typically we go for the fast pass and try to hit all 9 houses, 4 scare zones and most of the rides in one night. They also have two shows this year, ‘The Academy Of Villains :Afterlife’ and ‘Bill & Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure’ but we didn’t have time to check those out. If you have multiple days or a fast pass I suggest checking out everything the event has to offer but if you are limited on time or money I will break down the houses for you so you know what to check out first! These breakdowns may have mild spoilers in them
1. The Shining
This is easily the most visually impressive haunted house that Halloween Horror Nights has to offer this year. If you are a fan of the classic film, this house is going to blow your mind. Everything about the atmosphere, set design, and the scares was top notch. The use of sound from the movie was extremely effective and the actors were cast perfectly. They even use temperature changes to capture the feel of this classic film. Nothing was left out. We visited this house twice which I highly recommend. It is easy to miss little details in this incredibly intricate maze. I would rate this house a 10 out of 10.
2. Saw: The Games Of Jigsaw
The traps and horrific scenarios made for an amazing haunt experience. I am not the biggest fan of the movie series but the haunt was good enough it made me want to revisit it. 8 out of 10
3. American Horror Story: Volume 2
Covering Asylum, Coven and Roanoke this house had plenty of scares and incredible sets. This one really felt like walking into the world of AHS and living the most impactful scenes. The asylum parts were my favorite but the entire house was great, even the Que. 7 out of 10
4. Horrors of Blumhouse
Hitting Blumhouse classics such as ‘Insidious’, ‘The Purge’ and ‘Sinister’ this house was pretty fun. The highlight for me was delving into “The Further”. There is a fantastic outdoor ‘Purge’ Scare-zone so I feel like including it in the house was overkill. I would have been way more excited to see a ‘Get Out’ section of this haunt. The ‘Sinister’ portion was criminally short as well, but overall this house had some great moments. 7 out of 10
5. Ash Vs. Evil Dead
Everything you would expect. All of the best moments from the show and hilarious quips from Ash acted out by mostly convincing doubles. If you aren’t a fan of this show you may not enjoy this one because the scares are pretty tame. Based on accuracy and obvious love for the show I give this one 8 out of 10.
6. Dead Waters
One of 4 original haunted houses at Halloween Horror Nights this year and the atmosphere is incredible. The amazing costuming and set design along with relentless scares create an exciting experience. This takes you into a haunted, sunken riverboat in a swamp and it feels so real it’s scary. The original houses are fun because you never know quite what to expect. They have vague descriptions on the website and the map but nothing quite prepares you for what lies inside. 9 out of 10
7. The Fallen
This is the most metal haunted house I have ever been through. If you go through this house without throwing up devil horns you did it wrong. 9 out of 10
8. Scarecrow The Reaping
By far the best original house in the park this year. I don’t want to say much about this one other than you have to make this a priority. The actors were all on top of their game and the sets and costumes blew my mind. This was a groundbreaking haunted house. 10 out of 10
9. The Hive
Every year there is always one that doesn’t quite work for me. Out of 9 houses and multiple scare zones that is not bad odds. The Hive was the least memorable house for me. The vampires didn’t look bad but most of them looked identical. The sets were fine but didn’t feature any exciting memorable moments and none of the scares really hit. That being said this is Halloween Horror Nights so even my least favorite house is better than your average haunted house. I will have to give bonus points to the crazy looking tall Nosferatu guy in the house, he looked amazing. 5 out of 10
Halloween Horror Nights 27 is another masterpiece in horror entertainment and attractions. There is still plenty of time left in the month so I suggest making a trip ASAP! Even if you don’t make it through all of the houses the entire event is a blast. Even the outdoor scare-zones alone are top notch experiences. ‘The Purge’ and ‘Trick r Treat’ scare-zones are must see. It isn’t a bad idea to check out the rides too. Most of them have short lines during the event. Hope you get to make it out to Universal Studios Orlando and check out this year’s festivities, if this event doesn’t put you in the Halloween spirit then nothing will.
