During AMC’s season seven finale of its hit show “The Walking Dead,” 20th Century Fox found another way to scare audiences already on the edge of their seats. During the commercial breaks, they introduced three new TV spots, each featuring a new title card at the end: Run. Hide. Pray. Featuring a mixture of footage seen in previous full-length trailers, they were highlighted by quick flashes of those creatures we’ve come to equate with terror, the new ‘neomorphs’ that are to be introduced in COVENANT, and what appears to be in several shots, the famed xenomorphs.
As we saw in previous installments, the xenomorph monsters adapt and change by assimilating some of the DNA of their victims. This resulted in the creature at the end of PROMETHEUS that was dubbed “The Deacon.” What this means for our crew of the colony ship Covenant, we’ll just have to wait and see.
The official synopsis on the ALIEN: COVENANT site states:
Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created, with ALIEN: COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking ALIEN franchise. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape. Directed by Scott, the film stars Katherine Waterston, Michael Fassbender, James Franco, Billy Crudup, Carmen Ejogo, Danny McBride and Callie Hernandez, with a screenplay by John Logan. The film looks to capture the gorgeous visuals of its predecessor PROMETHEUS while adding the dark, confining, grueling horror of the original ALIEN.
With many proclaiming that Scott is sending us back to the horror that defined a generation with ALIEN: COVENANT, we’ll get to judge for ourselves when the film releases on May 19, 2017.
