Clive Barker fans, take note: Variety has announced Brannon Braga (Star Trek: The Next Generation) will be the prime mover behind a feature film based on Barker’s groundbreaking extreme horror fiction anthology Books of Blood.
The announcement lists Braga as co-writer & co-executive producer, and marks his feature directing debut (he previously directed episodes of The Orville, Salem and Cosmos). Adam Simon — co-creator of Salem with Braga — has signed on as co-writer, with Barker himself contributing new original material. Barker will also serve as co-executive producer along with Orville creator/star Seth MacFarlane, Erica Huggins, and Alana Kleiman of Fuzzy Door Productions, along with Brian Witten, Jeff Kwatinetz and Josh Barry.
Described as “a journey through three uncanny tales tangled in space and time,” the film will star Anna Friel, Britt Robertson, Rafi Gavron, and Yul Vazquez, playing the following characters:
“Mary” (Friel): A brilliant, beautiful psychologist who has gained fame as a skeptic that debunks all theories or beliefs that are not solely scientifically based. She loses her 7-year-old son to leukemia and then meets Simon who becomes her lover and convinces her that he speaks for her dead child.
“Jenna” (Robertson): A hypersensitive girl who suffers from “misphonia” — an abhorrence of sound. As she learns her mother is about to send her back to the “Farm,” she steals her mother’s cash and sets out for Los Angeles.
“Simon” (Gavron): A handsome, charismatic young man who convinces Mary that he is a “ghost whisperer” who speaks for her dead child.
“Bennett” (Vazquez): A professional killer who’s latest “hit” clues him in on a priceless book that may allow him and his wife to permanently retire. On his search for the tome, his quest leads him straight into supernatural terror.
The film is expected to debut on Hulu next Fall. Stay tuned for more updates!
