The DC Cinematic Universe keeps moving right along and now it looks we are getting a BATGIRL film!
Variety is reporting that former Marvel director Joss Whedon (AVENGERS, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON) will be writing and directing the first ever solo BATGIRL movie. Personally, I would like to forget the 1997 movie BATMAN & ROBIN that features Alicia Silverstone playing the masked female heroin. Joss is also known for his classic cult hits such and “Firefly” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”
The BATMAN V SUPERMAN Ultimate Cut actually had a cameo appearance of Barbara Gordon portrayed by the very talented Jena Malone. I would love to see her cast as BATGIRL but since her footage was not in the theatrical cut of the film they may just recast her altogether. Personally, I am hoping for Emma Stone to take the cowl if the decide to recast.
Right now this joins a huge list of announced DC movies including GOTHAM CITY SIRENS, GREEN LANTERN CORPS, MAN OF STEEL 2, CYBORG, THE FLASH, THE BATMAN and AQUAMAN. I would guess that most of these will change or possibly not even get a release. As of now, this is a solid lineup that would be made even better with Batgirl in the mix.
Joss Whedon has expressed interest in a BLACK WIDOW movie and the first draft of a WONDER WOMAN movie so it sounds like a female comic flick will be a passion project for Joss. I am a fan of most of his work and even at his worst (AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON) he still made it a fun ride. Things are looking up for the DC Cinematic Universe and it will continue that way if WONDER WOMAN and Justice League manage to impress audiences and critics for 2017. Personally, I am ecstatic that Joss Whedon has jumped over to the world of DC Comics. If this movie ever sees the light of day, I look forward to checking it out.
