It’s hard to imagine now, but when BLADE RUNNER released to theaters in 1982 it wasn’t a big hit commercially. It wasn’t until later via multiple cuts and incarnations did it garner a large cult following, becoming the litmus test for stylized dystopian science fiction. When it was announced that Ridley Scott was returning to write and produce a sequel, and Harrison Ford himself was willing to return as replicant hunter Rick Deckard, the internet lit up with excitement. Even though director Denis Villeneuve has kept the plot details under wraps, we finally get the title of the long-awaited sequel.

Cinema Blend showed off the film’s new title, BLADE RUNNER 2049, and gave some hints as to what we might expect the world to look like in that year. In the original film, we got a great look at Los Angeles in 2019, with its black, stormy skies contrasted with neon and LED skyscrapers, gigantic advertising screens, and flying police cars. We were treated to a dreary world where it seemed like even hope had been sucked out of the overpopulated city. We can’t believe that things could get worse.

Thirty years later, it appears that things have indeed gotten darker. Los Angeles inhabits most of the west coast. The environment is a disaster, even toxic. Tank-like hover plows have to clear out streets because the snow storms are so bad, and residents have to take shelter from the rain. While other details are extremely few and far between, we can only assume that a threat from replicants brings Decker back into the fray. It would be amazing to see the off-world colonies worked into the story as well. Luckily we only have a year to find out!

Harrison Ford is joined by Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Dave Bautista, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Mackenzie Davis, Barkhad Abdi, David Dastmalchian and Jared Leto. Denis Villeneuve directs a screenplay written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green. Ridley Scott and Fancher wrote the story that builds off of Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.

Along with the title announcement, an amazing photo was released of stars Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling talking to Ridley Scott and Denis Villeneuve on the set of the film.
