It’s been a while since we heard updates from Blumhouse & director Leigh Whannell’s new take on Universal’s legendary character, based on the classic novel by H.G. Wells. But fret not: Entertainment Weekly has just unveiled three “First Look” images from the film, featuring star Elisabeth Moss (US), and Universal has posted the film’s first trailer.
Moss takes center-stage as Cecilia Cass, who goes into hiding to escape her abusive husband (Hill House’s Oliver Jackson-Cohen), who also happens to be a wealthy scientist conducting secret experiments in… well, you can probably figure that out yourself.
Cecilia’s sanity begins to crumble after her ex’s apparent suicide, which she’s convinced was faked – and she must struggle to convince her family and the authorities that the mad scientist is still alive… and even more dangerous.
“The image of the Invisible Man in the floating trench coat and the floating sunglasses is one that is clearly etched into the public consciousness,” Whannell told EW. “I wanted to kind of get away from that and make something that was really modern, really grounded, or as grounded as you can be when you’re dealing with a film called The Invisible Man. Just something that was really tense and scary in a way The Invisible Man hasn’t been before.”
Moss’s talented co-stars include Aldis Hodge (Straight Outta Compton) and Storm Reid (A Wrinkle in Time), but Whannell admits “the script is really a one-woman show. Elisabeth Moss is the centerpiece of the film, and she’s in pretty much every scene. I feel like, if you’re going to hang an entire film on someone’s shoulders, you need an actor as good as Lizzie.”
Most details of the production are still under wraps (pardon the pun), but we expect to see a lot more in the months leading up to the film’s release, which is tentatively slated for next February. Stay tuned for more news… but in the meantime, check out the chilling new trailer!
