Oh, what a happy Hump Day this has turned into!
Just a few hours after I highlighted IT and The Dark Tower as two films with a lot of mystery still surrounding them, news broke that we finally have a glimpse of the new Pennywise!
Bill Skarsgard (Hemlock Grove) is going to attempt to fill the oversized clown shoes of Tim Curry in this adaptation that is expected to follow the book closer than the 1990 made-for-television film did. Skarsgard has said the character is “inhumane.. it’s beyond even a sociopath.”
Director Andy Muschietti, who helmed Mama, has clearly went out of his way to steer clear of clowns we’ve seen in the past. This isn’t the Joker, this isn’t Curry’s evil entity. This is pure evil in the shell of a clown and it has been acknowledged that the film is taking itself seriously with its Pennywise. Skarsgard went on to say, “It’s important that we do something fresh and original for this one.”
Boy, did they!
This Pennywise is wicked. I absolutely love the minimal make-up approach. No big shiny red nose here and the red makeup is far more sinister than the 1990 version. Disclaimer- that’s not to say anyone will ever be able to build upon Curry’s performance, which was downright legendary. It is safe to say, however, that a whole new generation will be haunted by our newest Pennywise.
Also, I know I’m not the only one absolutely giddy with excitement to see what they do with the hair, which is shrouded in shadow in the photo above.
IT will be broken up into two films, with the first hitting theaters on September 8, 2017.
