House of Wax

Homage to HOUSE OF WAX. Pre- Paris.

House of Wax

In honor of the anniversary of its theatrical release we take a look back at the significance of HOUSE OF WAX. Film rarely expect to be hits, much less a classic. HOUSE OF WAX was the  first studio made 3-D film. It also was a remake of the MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM. At that time, Vincent Price wasn’t yet the icon we all have grown to know him as. HOUSE OF WAX event had an ironic twist! Director, André de Toth, had only one eye! Making it nearly impossible to see the 3D effect. Most would see this as a disadvantage yet seemed to accentuate Toths’ story-telling! He wasn’t concentrating on the 3-D but put the focus into the story and it’s characters. At a time when horror was finding its voice again, HOUSE OF WAX focused on the evil in human emotions. Infusing the power of Vincent Price and film in terrifying vibrant color.

HOUSE OF WAX tells the story of Henry Jarrod, played by Vincent Price, a wax museum owner. Henry falls victim to a fire and takes revenge on all those responsible. His portrayal here is the first glimpse of what we as fans would come to know as vintage Price. The range of emotion in his character was head and shoulders above what other genre film actors were showing at the time. Also, be on the lookout for a young Charles Bronson as Igor. Made for 1 million dollars and bringing in over 23 million at the box office, the formula would lead others to try and follow in the films footsteps.

House of Wax

The film had a 3-D Blu Ray release in 2013 and I can vouch that it’s a captivating view even sixty plus years later. This is a film that I’m sure a new generation of film critics and fans will still be analyzing and celebrating for another 60 years. So today sit back and give thanks to HOUSE OF WAX. For all it inspired and helped create for the genre that we all hold near and dear to our hearts. As a side note the film was remade in 2005. The remake holds little in common with this film and I can’t recommend viewing it unless you are just a completest or have a thing for Paris Hilton.
