The world needs a new MORTAL KOMBAT movie like it needs a new SPAWN film or a fourth BLADE. It’s probably not at the top of the list of things this country needs to do immediately but it’d be pretty sweet if it got done!
Like any smart franchise these days, the folks developing the next MORTAL KOMBAT film have reeled James Wan in as a producer. While Wan has been more than busy over the last several years (SAW franchise, INSIDIOUS, THE CONJURING, LIGHTS OUT, ANNABELLE, FURIOUS 7 have made him a household name while the upcoming AQUAMAN film should throw him into a whole new stratosphere), the filmmaker is still taking on tasks, including directing the pilot of the new MacGyver television series and attaching himself to the MORTAL KOMBAT film.
Per IGN, Wan professed his love for the Mortal Kombat universe and pointed out that “the key here is to try and do it right”. Wan isn’t inclined to suggest the film get rushed, citing that it’s “more important..to make sure it’s heading in the right direction…than trying to rush through it and pump up something that no one likes.”
There hasn’t been a lot of news coming out of the MK camp and so it’s interesting to hear Wan, as the producer of the film, speaking about it but it just goes to show how excited people are for this film to get up off the ground.
There’s no doubt that Wan will infuse a heck of a horror element into the franchise and while there may be some nervousness that the franchise is simply adding Wan’s name to the credits to gain traction when it comes to distribution and figuring out a budget, James has never been the type to just sign on the dotted line with a franchise. Make no mistake – Wan is going to be a big part of the MORTAL KOMBAT film universe revival. It’s just a matter of when.
