Visionary filmmaker Lars Von Trier will begin shooting his newest film THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT in August. Von Trier had previously planned to do it as a TV series but decided to make it a film.
The film will cover over a decade in the life of a serial killer and will connect five of his murders that he is calling the five incidents. Much like his previous film NYMPHOMANIAC he will have the stories interspersed into the narrative of the film. Von Trier has always done things his own way.
From being a part of the Dogma 95 movement to the massive scale and boundary pushing of NYMPHOMANIAC. I’ve always considered the bulk of Von Trier’s filmography as horror although not in the traditional sense. THE KINGDOM tv series was adapted into KINGDOM HOSPITAL here in the states and ANTICHRIST contained some of the most soul draining content seen by audiences in a long while. With THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT, he could very well redefine the serial killer sub-genre that have been played off of well-worn tropes.
While no names have been announced in regards to casting we do know that it will feature two male leads and four female characters. With a wide array of past collaborators he will have some of the best actors in the world to choose from. Here’s hoping Willem Dafoe and Udo Kier are among those considered as they’ve put forth excellent performances in his past films frequent collaborator Charlotte Gainsbourg also would seem tailor fit for a role. Although details at this time are slim we do know that come 2018 we very well could see Lars Von Trier and company provide macabre terror the likes of which we’ve never seen.
