After Sony Pictures won a bidding war for the rights to the adaptation of the graphic novel MY FAVORITE THING IS MONSTERS they’re already in early talks with Sam Mendes to both produce and direct the film. Deadline has reported that Mendes could develop the film through his Neal Street banner, and Amasia Entertainment and Columbia Pictures will also produce.
In the critically acclaimed graphic novel, set against the tumultuous political backdrop of late ’60s Chicago, MY FAVORITE THING IS MONSTERS is the fictional graphic diary of 10-year-old Karen Reyes, filled with B-movie horror and pulp monster magazines iconography. Karen Reyes tries to solve the murder of her enigmatic upstairs neighbor, Anka Silverberg, a holocaust survivor, while the interconnected stories of those around her unfold. When Karen’s investigation takes us back to Anka’s life in Nazi Germany, the reader discovers how the personal, the political, the past, and the present converge.
Sam Mendes is known as an active producer, and his latest directing credits include REVOLUTIONARY ROAD, SKYFALL, and SPECTRE. His producing work spans both film and TV, including ROAD TO PERDITION and REVOLUTIONARY ROAD, and shows such as “The Hollow Crown” and “Penny Dreadful.”
As Emil Ferris’ first graphic novel, it is known for its unique artistic flair that is meant to look like doodling in ruled notebook pages. Since its release in February, it has accumulated rave reviews, keeping a 5-star rating on Amazon alone. It will be interesting to see how not only the material but how the visuals will be tackled in the different medium. Sam Mendes has proven that he is up for the task.
As it’s recently been acquired, there is no release information at this time, but we’ll be keeping our eyes out for any developments on MY FAVORITE THING IS MONSTERS.
