The Tall Man is Back! In High Definition and Taller Than Ever!

Every once in awhile a horror film comes along that managers to permanently sear its’ mark onto your brain like a sort of twisted, malevolent brand. For me, and many others, one such film is the 1979 classic, PHANTASM.

Awhile back, we became aware of the restoration project for the original being funded and spearheaded by Bad Robot. There was much rejoicing.

Today, according to an article published by Entertainment Weekly we’ve learned that not only is the restoration complete but PHANTASM: REMASTERED and the new sequel, PHANTASM: RAVAGER have official release dates.

According to EW, distributors Well Go USA Entertainment have acquired the North American distribution rights to Don Coscarelli’s PHANTASM franchise which includes the recently completed RAVAGER film. Both PHANTASM REMASTERED and PHANTASM: RAVAGER will receive theatrical releases.

PHANTASM: REMASTERED will hit cinemas on September 24 th 2016 to commemorate the first Art House Theater Day. RAVAGER will be released both in theater and via digital HD on October 7 th . PHANTASM: REMASTERED and HD restorations of 1994’s PHANTASM III: LORD OF THE DEAD and PHANTASM IV: OBLIVION will also be released on cable and via digital platforms.

Plans have not yet been finalized but, according to Entertainment Weekly, 1988’s PHANTASM II will also be available to view. Later this year, the films will (finally) be released on Blu-ray and DVD both individually and in a collector’s edition boxed set.

The Tall Man

Well – I don’t know about you- but this is something I’ve been waiting for for a long, long time. Theatrical release aside, a idea of finally getting a restored PHANTASM Blu-ray is something definitely worth getting excited over.

With the recent passing of the Tall Man himself, Angus Scrimm, this quite the fitting bit of news. What better way to honor his legacy than with a beautiful new version of the classic film that turned him into the “creepy uncle” type figure we know and love today.

So – who will we be seeing at the cinema come September 24 th ? I’ll be there – with as many brain scrambling silver balls as I can possibly carry.

Thank you Bad Robot – for helping bring one of the finest cult classics back to the big screen.

We definitely look forward to being afraid of middle aged morticians again.
