Ever since it was announced that Martin Scorsese was teaming up with Leonardo DiCaprio to tackle the infamous serial killer H.H. Holmes, horror and true-crime fans have been salivating. Due to other projects, however, news on the project has been few and far between. It sounds like that’s about to change now, as his latest project SILENCE is due to hit theaters.

Left to right: Director/Producer Martin Scorsese discusses a scene with Leonardo DiCaprio (who plays Jordan Belfort) on the set of THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, from Paramount Pictures and Red Granite Pictures.

Speaking to the Toronto Sun, Scorsese gave an update on the anticipated film:

One of the things that I had to stop for the past six months,” Scorsese said about his final push to complete his new spiritual drama SILENCE, “was my meetings on that script. They want me to start again in January and see if we can find a way because it’s an extraordinary story.”

Leonardo DiCaprio is set to play Dr. Henry Howard Holmes, a charismatic con man who schemed his way into building a large hotel, or as it would be known as his “murder castle,” where he build a maze of rooms and hallways to hide death traps and greased chutes that would lead to a veritable dungeon of horrors.

The book in which the film will be based, The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson, tells an intertwining tale between Holmes and an architect of the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago, where Holmes lured many of his virtually faceless victims. DiCaprio bought the films rights to the book in 2010, and both have had an interest in bringing the project to life since.

This will mark yet another collaboration between the two, as they have previously worked together on films like GANGS OF NEW YORK,  THE DEPARTED, SHUTTER ISLAND and THE WOLF OF WALL STREET.

If you want to learn more about the fascinating story of H.H. Holmes, his murder castle, and his schemes that led him to claim anywhere from 9 to 200 victims, you can check out the 2004 documentary “H.H. Holmes: America’s First Serial Killer” on Netflix, or a more in-depth but hilarious multi-part investigation into Holmes’ story on the true-crime comedy podcast “Last Podcast on the Left.”

You can also catch Martin Scorsese’s latest film, SILENCE, with Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, and Liam Neeson when it opens in theaters on January 6th, 2017.
