In 2002, Gore Verbinski gave us a new fear of sleepovers, VHS tapes and creepy little girls crawling out of wells. Verbinski’s film, THE RING, was and adaptation of the 1998 Japanese horror film RING. The Japanese film was based on the novel “Ring” by Koji Suzuki.
Verbinski’s film stayed close to the literary origin but with a minor adjustment. He chose a female lead who was a journalist investigating a mysterious videotape which seems to cause the death of anyone in a week of viewing it. Cast included Naomi Watts (Rachel Keller), Martin Henderson (Noah Clay) and David Dorfman (Aidan Keller)
2005 continued the saga with Hideo Nakata, director of the original Japanese film RING, on which the American versions are based, directed this film in place of Gore Verbinski. The film is based on continuing the story, six months after the original storyline, Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts) and her son Aidan (David Dorfman) have moved from Seattle to Astoria. Rachel begins a new job at The Daily Astorian, a local newspaper, working for Max Rourke (Simon Baker). Before long, there is news of the teenager’s death in town. Rachel investigates, finding the dead boy’s face shows a twisted expression of horror just like the previous victims of Samara Morgan’s tape. Upon finding the boy’s corpse, she also has a vision of Samara grabbing her and declaring “I found you.” She goes to the police station and persuades the girl who witnessed the boy’s death to tell her where the tape is. She takes the tape deep into the woods and burns it.
Don’t know about you but we are certainly excited about the long awaited third installment of this franchise from Paramount Pictures!
And a new chapter is coming soon in the beloved RING horror franchise. RINGS is about a young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a “movie within the movie” that no one has ever seen before…
