Deadline.com is reporting that Sophie Cookson (Kingsman: The Secret Service) just stepped into the lead role in the supernatural thriller The Crucifixion, from the filmmaking team behind The Conjuring. Peter Safran, producer on the box office hits The Conjuring and its spinoff Annabelle, is producing from a script by Chad and Carey Hayes. The brothers Hayes, who also will produce this one, penned the screenplay for 2013’s The Conjuring, which ended up grossing $318M worldwide.
The Crucifixion, which is based on real events, will be directed by Xavier Gens (The Divide, Hitman). Principal photography begins today in Romania on the story about a priest who is jailed for the murder of a nun on whom he was performing an exorcism. An investigative journalist delves into the story to determine whether he killed a mentally ill person or if he lost the battle with a demonic presence.
