Episodes of Horror: Psych – Tuesday the 17th

The USA Network’s hit comedy Psych was well known among fans for it’s love letter episodes to the shows creator’s favorite movies and TV shows and this might be their best. Tuesday the 17th pays tribute to the Friday the 13th series and 80s slasher films in general and it does a fantastic job of it!

17th

After the standard Psych flashback to its protagonists childhood together this episode get kicked off with a woman alone in a cottage popping some popcorn and sitting down to watch some TV when she begins to hear strange noises and if you’ve seen as many horror movies as I have you can probably finish this story. The show’s heroes Shawn and Gus return to their childhood camp witch had been closed down years prior due to a death. Their childhood friend Jason bought the camp and was going to reopen it until the disappearance of one of his counselors so he call Shawn and Gus to investigate.  Shortly after arriving Jason begins to act strangely and our heroes are left to solve the mystery without their usual police back-up as Jason insists they not involve them.

Tuesday the 17th was written by star of Psych James Roday and show creator Steve Franks and was the directorial debut for James Roday. James Roday is a big horror fan and loves the Friday the 13th series. He even appeared the the 2009 documentary His Name Was Jason: 30 Years of Friday the 13thHe did a great job making this episode feel like a horror movie. There were nods to the genre everywhere from the cast of characters to the cinematography. It really doesn’t feel like a normal Psych episode. the show is primarily a family comedy but this episode still managed to build some real tension and even a few moments of terror. James Roday went on to write sevral more episodes of Psych before it went of the air in 2014 and recently wrote and directed a horror film called Gravy set to come out October 2nd.
