EXCLUSIVE: TERROR TIME INVADES THE EXORCIST ESCAPE ROOM PREMIERE

When FOX first announced that there was going to be a reboot of The Exorcist as a TV series I’m the first to admit that I was unenthusiastic about the project.  The original film was perfect.  It was well written, well directed, and scared the living crap out of nearly every person who watched it.  The idea that a film that is held in such high regard by most horror fans, has continued to terrify audiences for over 40 years, and that has been called one of the most frightening  films of all time on multiple occasions can be re done not only as a film, but as a TV series has certainly caught the attention of fans across the board leaving all of us eager to see the end result.

Now despite my original opinion, after seeing the preview which was released at this years SDCC I have to say that I am on board to give this series a shot and am actually really looking forward to checking it out tonight.  As you can see in the preview below, this show is going to be very different from the 1973 film.  I wouldn’t even call it a reboot at this point as this series will clearly follow its own story line.  While I’m sure it will be heavily influenced and probably pay homage to the original film, this version appears to be giving us something we have not seen before and is probably best received to be viewed as its own entity versus a reboot or remake.   Either way, the preview has me hooked enough to be eagerly awaiting tonight’s season premiere and a cast line up with names such as Geena Davis and Alan Ruck only increases my anticipation.

Having covered my initial reaction to the show and despite not having seen yet, when I was offered the chance to attend the premiere event for The Exorcist escape room at Escape Hotel I jumped at the opportunity. The night started out with a cocktail party at Escape Hotel located off of Hollywood Blvd which was attended by several cast and crew members from the show.  The lobby was decorated in theme, employees dressed in zombie like bell hop outfits and included an Exorcist themed photo booth.  After enjoying a few “Devilish” cocktails and mingling for a bit, my group was called and I was off to see what surprises awaited in The Exorcist Official escape room.

For those unaware of the escape room trend sweeping the country, an escape room is essentially exactly what it sounds like.  A group of anywhere from 2-15 people are locked in a maze of rooms and have to find clues and solve puzzles to try to find the way out before running out of time.   This experience followed those same guidelines with a few additional twists thrown in.  To start off you enter a church like room with several pews.  There is a priest waiting who claims he needs the entire group’s help to exorcise a possessed child and we must solve the puzzles throughout the room to assist him in his exorcism.  Now, this would obviously be no fun at all if I gave away the clues to getting through the steps to the room so I’m not going to that.   I will say that one thing that sets this escape room apart from others I have done in the past is the amount of theatrics put into it and how well they are done.  Both the room and actors are constantly reacting to what is happening through out the experience.  The priest’s are constantly trying to guide you to the next steps, you encounter possessed actors hidden behind some doors and poltergeist like activity behind others.  Doors slam shut, lights flicker, drawers open themselves, there were even a few points where the entire room, floor and all, would begin to shake.  Despite our best efforts, my group did not have what it took to make it out of the room before running out of time and we were let out of the room without successfully exorcising any demons.  That being said, it was absolute blast and I will definitely be back to give it another go!
