No one can argue the overwhelming success that became the first season of Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” that STAND BY ME meets GOONIES meets X-FILES meets EXPLORERS meets POLTERGEIST phenomenon that seemed to come out of nowhere. From the time people wrapped up their first binge sessions with the eight-episode sci-fi horror series thoughts began to turn towards what was next, and if there would be a season two.
Originally talked about as being an anthology series, no one could have imagined just how popular the young cast of season one was, and how the audiences connected with them. Appearances on late night talk shows and even the Emmys caused fans to fall in love with them even more. There was no way another season could go than to follow up on the adventures of the gang from Hawkins, and that’s exactly what we’re getting.
To give us an extra shot of feels, and some of us flashbacks, in a show already packed with nostalgia like a G.I. Joe lunchbox, Entertainment Weekly has offered up our first look at the new season. Showing a shot from the upcoming teaser airing during the Super Bowl, we get to see Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), and Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) in front of the middle school dressed up as none other than the Ghostbusters for Halloween.
Set in 1984, a year after the first season of “Stranger Things,” their choice of costumes is perfect. That was the year we learned to not be afraid of no ghost, and I remember tons of kids wanting to bust ghosts with a fancy proton pack, and many a vacuum cleaner was cannibalized for parts. It also fits with the theme of the new season, as the friends and family of Will Byers, and indeed a lot of Hawkins try desperately to find a sense of normalcy after the events that wrapped up Season one.
The teaser for “Stranger Things” season two debuts during the Super Bowl, with a full episode release sometime this year. How excited are you for the upcoming season, and what are you looking forward to the most?
