Life And Times Of Carl Grimes – Walking Dead Mid-Season Finale Recap
Alexandria goes boom!
All hell broke out last night in the mid-season finale of The Walking Dead. Both sides could win or lose the entire battle. Soldiers are hurt, weapons are scarce and everyone is exhausted. The show has left the comic books at this point of the story and is creating a different path. Last night’s shocker is this. Carl has been bit. This is the largest character death on the series to date and will play out to an end when the series returns. Carl lived for more then 100 episodes and inspired countless memes online. Chandler Riggs has literally grown up before our eyes and last night his character Carl became a man and a hero in many respects.
THR had the chance to speak with Andrew Lincoln about this episode.
“It’s huge,” Lincoln says. “I always thought Carl was going to be the one who led the show forward; that Rick would hand over his boots and revolver when he walked off into the sunset in season 28. My first reaction was silence. Scott Gimple called me up and said, “You’re going to hate this one.” He’s very good about alerting the cast when there’s going to be a [character] death. I tried guessing four times and was nowhere near Chandler Riggs’ name. Scott had to say that it was Carl. I just didn’t speak for a minute. I always thought Carl was going to be the one who led the show forward; that Rick would hand over his boots and revolver when he walked off into the sunset in season 28.”
His take on the back 8
It’s one hell of a back-eight [episodes of the season]. It was incredibly sad, as you can imagine. It’s was challenging for me as an actor, but in a good and exciting way. I was nervous coming to work to try and factor in this radical change in Rick’s life. I was trying to make sense of that as the show continues. This is seismic. As the season progresses, all of us kept saying that this was bigger than Glenn’s death. This is the biggest death [of a character] we’ve ever had and probably ever will have, actually, if you are a comic reader and realize the importance of Carl in the comics.
The most talked about scene from last night
I never imagined Carl going anywhere. Last nights episode was so action packed it was a little overwhelming. Negan and Rick finally slug it out. Negan and The Saviors get the upper hand for a minute and Carl reveals he’s been bit. I mean Holy Shit, right? Last night was the perfect example of why this show has lived as long as it has.
The back 8 in season 8 are going to be brutal.
