Batman

Batman Episode 1: Realm Of Shadows dropped Tuesday of this week. As a rabid Bat-fan I downloaded the season pass immediately and I’ll be reviewing each chapter as they release.

Telltale Games first won me over with The Walking Dead series. The game was so unique and it was one of the few games I’ve played where I really felt like my choices had a large impact on the way the story played out. It wasn’t as simple as just be nice or be a dick to everyone. It was full of moral dilemmas that weren’t so cut and dry. Since then, I have played through various other Telltale games such as “Back To The Future”, “Game Of Thrones” and “The Wolf Among Us” and I have honestly enjoyed them all. The only issues I have with any of the Telltale games has been the lag, various bugs and sound effects dropping in and out. Unfortunately, all of these issues were still present in “Batman: A Telltale Games Series” but the incredible story helps this Dark Knight rise above all of it.

The story of “Batman: A Telltale Games Series” is less about Batman and more about Bruce Wayne. Bruce (voiced by Troy Baker) is struggling to maintain his lifestyle of politics, city reform and nightly crime fighting as the vigilante, Batman. On top of everything, new information has mysteriously leaked to the press that ties the deceased Wayne family members to the mob. This is a devastating revelation for Bruce and it throws into question everything that he has worked for so far as Batman. The story is also filled with cameos by familiar characters to the Batman mythos and is sure to please fans.

The “choose your own adventure” style of the gameplay works really well for Batman. Playing the billionaire playboy during the day and delivering brutal justice at night keeps the story from ever getting boring. Like I said earlier, I did run into some bugs with sound effects and lag but it was never unbearable. But overall, “Batman: A Telltale Games Series” is an almost flawless execution of what a Batman game should be. It was obviously written and created by people who understand Gotham and the wackos that decide to still live there for some reason. Check out episode 1 now, available digitally on PS4 and Xbox 1.
